Miata is one step closer to becoming California legal! It only took like 6 hours to do but at least it’s finally done. And since it’s the same exact midpipe, just cali legal instead of federal, I get the same performance and do not need to swap it to pass smog. I had considered buying a stock exhaust and swapping every two years to save money. But man it ain’t easy doing that without air tools and a lift!
While it took way longer the first time I swapped exhaust a couple years ago, it was still not an insignificant amount of time spent basically weight lifting all day. My 3 foot breaker bar came in handy as well as my cordless impact once I broke things loose. The worst part though was dealing with my damn driver seat. In order to plug in the new O2 sensor, driver seat has to come out and I forgot how much of a pain that is to deal with. I lost my ratcheting, flex head 14mm wrench in my cross country move so it was a major pain to use a flat box/crescent wrench instead. That is on the short list of tools to suck it up and buy again.
I spent way too long and got way too dirty today, but that is a good Saturday as far as I’m concerned. After cleaning up and taking a test drive, I was super concerned about the terrible burning smell coming from the car. But some quick go ogling taught me that new cats smell like shit for a while. So I just need to do some more test driving to get the crap out of the system. Drove pretty good, perhaps better than before, but I also haven’t driven the Miata in a couple of weeks. And I always am surprised at how it feels quick/lively when I step away and drive other stuff.
What's left for my cali legal endeavor is a stock header, replacing part of my wiring harness to make my cam position sensor work right, and fixing the speed sensor. Then I will be fully legal and have no check engine lights! Hopefully I can accomplish all of this soon so that I can just move on with my life.

Does California not care that you, not a professional shop, put on the new converters? I thought they were sticklers about that.

Remember, our Oppo- resident Cali smog tech works at a shop that could usually care less.
It wouldn’t surprise me that some smog shops skirt some of the inspections and just go “ehhh, sticker it and call it a day” when they see something that looks professional enough and not question it.

No, it doesn’t matter who installs it, only that it has an EO number as is valid for the car.

It’s not even that, they just don’t even bother to laugh. I actually had a customer the other day who was surprised I even opened the hood. He said the last few times he’s had a smog done they didn’t even bother to open the hood. That’s just baffling to me, but that’s how lazy techs are.

*Clears throat*
Do you have an EO sticker for that?

At least my parking lot is indoors so I'm not really in the elements. Not that the elements are all that bad in Socal anyways. I've got an EO number that I paid out the ass for so I'm good on that front.

Yup yup, it commanded a frigging $100 premium just to get the damn EO approval. I'm planning to go the fully legal route rather than find a lazy shop. Just not worth the hassle.

Almost there! I’m a bit jealous of your “garage”. Seems like a pretty sweet set up. Is it under your apartment?

Oh don’t worry, I pay out the ass for it. Rent including parking is like $2k a month. It’s $55 a spot for parking, but at least there is no limit to the amount of cars I can have.
But yeah its floors P1 and P2 for the garage while floors 2-5 are apartments. I've got a tandem spot on one end of the garage for my cars and a single spot on the other end for my girlfriend. The pool and gym and other shit are on floor 2. It’s a decent setup and not too many other places we looked at in the price range had decent parking garages. Definitely my number one requirement though!

haha nice! And that is a bit high. You must be in the city?

It’s Los Angeles so everything is high priced unless you feel like having no parking, no amenities, and no air conditioning in the ghetto. I’m very much not “in the city” but LA is very odd since there is no defined city area really. It’s all one giant sprawl until you hit mountains. Then it’s literal nowhereland followed by desert and then rural areas. It's quite neat flying in on a plane to see the ridiculous spread of stuff.

Interesting. Some day I’ll get out west to check it out!

Hell yeah man. Hi t me up for some canyon carving when you do =). Im still pretty convinced that the roads in your area are better but theres that whole 4 months per year that you cant drive them which kind of sucks. I think it’s more scenic in Cali but longer, more deserted and technical in your neck of the woods. Short sections of Socal canyon roads have them beat but its so shortlived and well traveled.

For sure dude! And yeah there are some difficult roads around here for sure. It’ll be hard to move away from these mountains if I ever end up having to do so!

I think I could be happy anywhere in the world so long as there are mountains. That is what I have learned the more that I travel places. Flat places seem uninhabitable to me!

haha! Yes! I agree with that sentiment completely!
